Chiefs QB Cassel returns to practice (AP)

FILE -- This is an Aug. 29, 2009, file photo showing Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel(notes) (7) grabbing his knee after being tackled by Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Brandon Mebane(notes), right, during the first quarter of their NFL preseason football game in Kansas City, Mo. If Cassel has to miss the beginning of the season with a knee injury, what do the Chiefs do now?

Quarterback Matt Cassel appeared on Kansas City's practice field Monday for the first time since injuring his left knee on Aug. 29, but his status for Sunday's opener at Baltimore remained unclear. Cassel, who signed a six-year contract for a guaranteed $28 million, injured his knee on the third play of the third preseason game against Seattle.
