Tuesday’s American League probable pitching matchup capsules

Arguably the best young pitching prospect in baseball, Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore, makes his first 2012 start of the season on Tuesday as the Rays visit Detroit in a potential playoff preview. Moore is a leading early contender for AL Rookie of the Year. Bet on every game at WagerWeb.com!

Tampa Bay at Detroit – Rays LHP Matt Moore vs. Tigers RHP Rick Porcello: Moore experienced a meteoric rise through the Rays farm system before bursting onto the Major League scene in September, culminating with the Rays’ only postseason win. The 22-year-old is ranked as MLB.com’s top prospect. … The Tigers are hoping for great things out of Porcello, whose bump in velocity and improvement in swings and misses in Spring Training rewarded him for an early-offseason workout program. He’ll be starting his fourth Major League season at just 23.

Chicago White Sox at Cleveland – White Sox RHP Philip Humber vs. Indians RHP Jeanmar Gomez: The third pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft (by the Mets), Humber tries to follow up last year’s breakthrough, when he posted a 3.75 ERA with 26 starts in 28 appearances. Humber was 8-5 with a 3.10 ERA in the first half of 2011. … With an outstanding spring showing, Gomez earned the fifth spot on the Tribe’s starting staff. The right-hander has had stints with Cleveland over the past two years, but is on an Opening Day roster for the first time.

NY Yankees at Baltimore Orioles – Yankees RHP Freddy Garcia vs. Orioles LHP Wei-Yin Chen: Garcia clinched a spot in the rotation when Michael Pineda was placed on the DL with a shoulder injury, but a strong spring had the team debating carrying Garcia anyway. The soft-tosser was 2-0 with a 4.35 ERA in four starts vs. the O’s last year. … The 26-year-old southpaw from Taiwan will be making his Major League debut against the division-rival Yankees. Chen was 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA in five starts this spring.

Boston at Toronto – Red Sox RHP Daniel Bard vs. Jays RHP Kyle Drabek: After three years of dominant bullpen performances, Bard moves into his new role as a starter. He hasn’t worked in that role regularly since 2007 in the Minors. Bard has pitched 197 innings in his career, hopes to match that total this season. … Drabek was a late addition to the rotation after a foot injury to Dustin McGowan and the struggles of Brett Cecil. Drabek enters 2012 looking to rebound from a subpar rookie campaign that saw him go 4-5 with a 6.06 ERA in 18 games.

Seattle at Texas – Mariners RHP Blake Beavan vs. Rangers RHP Neftali Feliz: The former Rangers first-round draft pick Beavan was 1-1 with a 1.84 ERA against his former team last year, but this will be his first start in Arlington. The 23-year-old went 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA this spring to earn a rotation spot. … eliz makes his first Major League start after two successful years as the Rangers closer. He has a 2.55 career ERA, the lowest in team history among pitchers with at least 150 career innings. His career ERA at the Ballpark in Arlington is 3.50.

Kansas City at Oakland – Royals LHP Danny Duffy vs. A’s RHP Graham Godfrey: Blessed with a hot fastball and extraordinary stuff, Duffy is still searching for consistency in the Majors. He made 20 starts last year after coming up from Omaha and finished 4-8 with a lot of strikeouts — and walks. … Godfrey, who pitched five shutout innings against the Giants in his final exhibition start, was named the No. 4 starter two days later and is now set for his season debut. He went 1-2 with a 3.96 ERA in five games (four starts) for the A’s last year.

Utah Jazz (29-28): Utah came out of Sunday’s game with not only a loss but perhaps a depleted backcourt. Miles had his left foot in a protective boot after the game. Monday NBA Betting: Golden State Warriors against Denver Nuggets

PREVIEW: The Denver Nuggets are looking for retribution when they play the Golden State Warriors on Monday for the second time in three nights. The Nuggets suffered a humbling 112-97 loss to the Warriors in Oakland on Saturday in an ill-timed stumble considering the tight playoff race in the Western Conference. Denver will strive for a better effort at home against Golden State, which won for only the second time in nine games.

Golden State Warriors (22-33): Golden State received a surprise boost from swingman Brandon Rush in Saturday’s victory. Rush scored 20 points off the bench for his third 20-point outing of the season. He was one of seven players in double figures as the Warriors clinched the season series against Denver for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign. “It’s very satisfying knowing that a team came in with something to play for, with payback on their mind, and we found a way to put together 48 minutes of basketball,” Golden State coach Mark Jackson said.

Denver Nuggets (30-26): Point guard Ty Lawson scored 21 points Saturday and then let loose on his teammates after the disappointing loss. “It’s been like this for a month,” Lawson said. “We’ll beat Chicago, then lose to Toronto. Beat Orlando, and then we lose to New Orleans. We just need to have more focus. It’s getting ridiculous at this point. We’re losing to teams we shouldn’t lose to, especially with the magnitude of what’s going on in the season with the playoff run. We can’t be losing these games.” Denver expects to get forward Danilo Gallinari back from a thumb injury for the rematch.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Golden State is 2-0 against the Nuggets this season, including a victory that ended a six-game losing skid in Denver.

2. Warriors forward David Lee had 17 points Saturday to end a streak of seven consecutive 20-point outings.

3. Denver forward Wilson Chandler (groin) has missed four consecutive contests.

Shannon Brown scored 20 of his 24 points in the third quarter and is averaging 17.6 points in eight games as a starter. It was the latest victory in a stretch that has seen Phoenix go 17-8 since the middle of February to move within one game of the No. 8 seed in the West.

Minnesota Timberwolves (25-32): Ricky Rubio’s injury has been a disaster for the Timberwolves as the club has dropped 13 of 17 games since the rookie sensation was hurt March 9. The last five games have all resulted in losses for Minnesota, including a 99-90 setback to New Orleans on Saturday. All-Star forward Kevin Love has carried the club offensively, scoring 20-plus points in nine consecutive outings. He had a game-high 30 in the previous meeting with the Suns.

NBA Betting Predictions: Los Angeles Lakers vs New Orleans Hornets on Monday

PREVIEW: Kobe Bryant’s value to the Los Angeles Lakers was never more evident than in Saturday’s loss at Phoenix. With the league’s leading scorer sitting out his first game of the season, the Lakers offered little resistance and were waxed by the Suns 125-105. Los Angeles, which holds a half-game lead over the Clippers atop the Pacific Division, may be without Bryant again as it seeks to avoid a third straight loss when it visits the New Orleans Hornets on Monday.

Los Angeles Lakers (35-22): Bryant had played in 138 consecutive games before a painful left shin injury forced him to the bench. He will be re-evaluated Monday, but team trainer Gary Vitti said rest is the only remedy. Pau Gasol scored a season-high 30 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Andrew Bynum added 23 and 18 boards against the Suns. It was the fifth double-double in six games for Gasol, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds in a come-from-behind win over New Orleans on March 31.

New Orleans Hornets (15-41): New Orleans also leaned on its inside game in a 99-90 victory over Minnesota on Saturday. Forward Jason Smith scored a career-high 26 points and snared 10 rebounds while center Chris Kaman went for 21 points and 10 boards. Kaman missed the last matchup with the Lakers, but had 21 points and 12 rebounds in an overtime home loss to Los Angeles on March 14. Eric Gordon, who just returned from injury, has averaged 15.9 points in his career against the Lakers.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Lakers have won four straight against the Hornets, but had to rally from 17 and 10 points down in the two victories this season.

2. Hornets guard Jarrett Jack, averaging 15.6 points per game, has missed three straight games with a sprained foot.

3. The Lakers allowed a season-high point total against the Suns and their bench was outscored 58-10.

NBA Betting Odds: Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies on Monday

PREVIEW: Two of the Western Conference’s hottest teams square off when the Los Angeles visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday. Memphis has won seven of nine games since losing to the Los Angeles Clippers on March 24 after downing the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday. The Clippers have been even hotter by winning eight of nine games after dispatching the Sacramento Kings on Saturday. Los Angeles is one-half game behind the Los Angeles Lakers in the Pacific Division race.

Los Angeles Clippers  (34-22): Guard Randy Foye is enjoying a hot stretch in which he is averaging 20.1 points over the last six games. Foye scored 25 points and made 7 of 9 3-pointers against Sacramento in his second major long-range artillery fest in four games. Foye matched the franchise record with eight 3-pointers against Dallas on April 2. He also is aware the presence of stars Blake Griffin and Chris Paul is a big benefit. “The credit goes to my teammates,” Foye said. “My teammates draw so much attention. Chris and Blake find me and I’m standing there and those are shots I practice all the time, so I better make them.”

Memphis Grizzlies (32-23):
Guard Gilbert Arenas is fitting in with Memphis and also draining shots on an impressive basis. The controversial veteran who didn’t have a NBA job until signing with the Grizzlies last month is averaging 11.0 points over the last four games while knocking down 10 of 15 3-point shots. “It has been great because these guys have accepted me,” Arenas said. “I realized how much I really missed the game while I was gone.” Arenas scored a season-high 14 point against the Mavericks.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Clippers have beaten Memphis four consecutive times, including two victories in Los Angeles earlier this season.

2. Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay scored 25 points against Dallas after averaging only 13.0 points over the previous five games.

3. Paul has 12 steals the past two games after having one in a three-game span.

Oklahoma City Thunder visit Milwaukee Bucks on Monday: NBA Gambling

PREVIEW: The Milwaukee Bucks have surged back to the .500 mark – but surpassing that important milestone will require a win against one of the league’s best clubs. The Oklahoma City Thunder visit the Bradley Center on Monday looking to halt the Bucks’ four-game winning streak. Milwaukee is coming off a 116-94 drubbing of the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday and finds itself in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, one game back of New York and Philadelphia. The Thunder are coming off a lopsided win over Toronto on Sunday.

Oklahoma City Thunder (41-15): After finding themselves in a battle with the plucky Raptors in the early going, Oklahoma City put together one of its most dominant stretches of the season to put the game away. With the outcome still in doubt in the second half, the Thunder fashioned a 24-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to bring an emphatic end to their three-game losing skid. It served as a measure of revenge for Oklahoma City, which dropped both games to Toronto in last year’s head-to-head series.

Milwaukee Bucks (28-28): The arrival of Monta Ellis has had a positive effect on Milwaukee’s offense. The club is averaging 105 points over its last five games, while the defense (95.8 points per game) during that stretch has been equally as impressive. Ellis, who came to Milwaukee in a deadline deal with the Golden State Warriors, has been particularly effective during the club’s winning streak. The prolific shooting guard is averaging more than 22 points per game in that span while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Thunder held Toronto without a field goal for nearly nine minutes Sunday.

2. The teams last met nearly a year ago, with visiting Milwaukee pulling out a 110-106 overtime victory.

3. Oklahoma City is 12-5 on the back end of back-to-back games.

NBA Basketball Lines: Toronto Raptors vs Indiana Pacers on Monday

PREVIEW: While it may have been optimistic to peg the Toronto Raptors as a playoff contender at the outset of the season, a rash of injuries hasn’t exactly made things easier. The Raptors look to be without another of their key players Monday as they finish off a back-to-back road set against the Indiana Pacers. Toronto was run out of Oklahoma City in the second and third quarters of a 91-75 loss to the Thunder on Sunday. The Pacers are coming off an 86-72 loss to Boston on Saturday but still occupy the third spot in the East.

Toronto Raptors  (20-37): With Toronto already using a handful of NBA Development League players, the last thing the team wanted was another injury situation. Yet, that’s exactly what the Raptors face after watching franchise big man Andrea Bargnani leave Sunday’s loss in Oklahoma City with tightness in his troublesome left calf. He is considered doubtful for Monday’s game, and may see limited action the rest of the season. Bargnani leads the Raptors in scoring at just under 20 points per game but has appeared in only 31 games because of the injury.

Indiana Pacers (34-22):
With Indiana looking at securing home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, the team was given a sobering look at the kind of basketball they’ll likely be playing once the postseason arrives. The Celtics limited Indiana to just over 35 percent shooting in yet another solid defensive performance. “They controlled the game from the get-go,” Pacers forward David West said. “They are a veteran team and they know how to make you play at their pace.”

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Indiana has a pair of five-point wins in the first two meetings this season.

2. The Pacers have won six consecutive home games against Toronto.

3. Toronto has the third-highest shooting percentage in the Eastern Conference since the All-Star break, hitting at a 46-percent clip.

NBA Odds: Orlando Magic host the Detroit Pistons on Monday Night

PREVIEW: Snapping a five-game losing streak helped to get the focus back on basketball for the Orlando Magic, who will be seeking payback when they host the Detroit Pistons on Monday night. Orlando has lost both meetings with the Pistons this season, including a 102-95 defeat at Detroit last week in which the Magic were missing three starters. Saturday’s win at Philadelphia came after Magic coach Stan Van Gundy and superstar center Dwight Howard pledged to put any differences aside.

Detroit Pistons (21-35): Detroit had won three in a row and five of six before dropping the first two of its four-game road trip. Sunday’s 98-75 loss at Miami marked the fifth time in 10 games that the Pistons have failed to reach 80 points. As a team, Detroit managed a season-low eight assists against 19 turnovers in falling to 6-23 away from home. “It was easy for them,” said guard Brandon Knight, who had a team-high 16 points.

Orlando Magic (33-23): Second-leading scorer Ryan Anderson (ankle) has missed three straight games and could return Monday. The one silver lining with the injuries has been the emergence of Glen “Big Baby” Davis. Making his fourth straight start, Davis had 23 points and 12 rebounds in the 88-82 win at Philadelphia. Davis, who was signed to a four-year, $26 million deal in the offseason, has averaged 21.8 points and 11.3 rebounds in his four starts. He had scored in single digits in 12 of 16 games last month.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Howard missed last week’s game in which the Pistons outrebounded the Magic 45-30. Detroit also controlled the glass 39-28 in an 89-78 win on Jan. 2.

2. Howard is averaging 18.2 points and 12.4 rebounds in his career against the Pistons.

Monday NBA Betting: Washington Wizards against Charlotte Bobcats

PREVIEW: Somebody is destined to leave the arena with a rare dose of happiness when the Charlotte Bobcats host the Wizards on Monday in a matchup of the NBA’s two worst teams. Charlotte has lost 11 consecutive games and the Bobcats will have a hard time reaching double digits in victories if they fall to Washington. The Washington Wizards have defeated the Bobcats in both previous meetings this season but have lost five straight and 10 of 11.

Washington Wizards (12-44): Washington’s final 10 games may appear meaningless but they are important contests to second-year point guard John Wall, who would like to mix in a few victories while furthering his development. Wall started slow after the lockout but has picked up the pace over the second half. In 23 games since the All-Star break, Wall is averaging 17.0 points and 7.8 assists. He had 28 points and 10 assists Thursday against the Detroit Pistons to become the sixth-fastest player to reach 2,000 career points and 1,000 assists. Wall got there in 124 games – legendary Oscar Robertson holds the record of 98.

Charlotte Bobcats (7-47): Rookie guard Kemba Walker was a big-time scorer in college but has struggled with his shooting much of the season. Walker is shooting 36.7 percent from the field and his shot selection occasionally frustrates coach Paul Silas. The veteran coach said Walker is better at distributing the ball than shooting it at this point of his career but adores his attitude. “He listens and he works hard,” Silas said. “You can approach him on anything and he’s willing to listen to you, so I have no problem with him at all.”

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. Washington edged the Bobcats by three points in Charlotte on Jan. 28 and rolled up a 17-point home win three nights earlier.

2. Bobcats point guard D.J. Augustin (knee) is a game-time decision after missing the previous two contests.

3. Wizards forward Trevor Booker and center Nene have each missed five straight games with foot ailments.
