THE STORY: After spending years on the periphery, the Seminoles are poised to end the Duke-North Carolina stranglehold that has gripped the ACC for nearly a decade. A sellout crowd will be on hand for the biggest game in program history as No. 16 Florida State tries to complete a season sweep of Duke and move closer to its first ACC regular season title. A second win over the No. 4 Blue Devils would give the Seminoles the tiebreaker over Duke and North Carolina. Michael Snaer’s stunning buzzer-beater gave Florida State a 76-73 victory on Jan. 21, ending Duke’s home winning streak at 45 games.

ABOUT DUKE (23-4, 10-2 ACC): The Blue Devils didn’t have to worry about staging a big comeback Sunday against rebuilding Boston College as they routed the young Eagles 75-50 for their fourth straight win. Duke had rallied from 10 and 20-point deficits in two of its previous three victories. Seth Curry had 18 points against Boston College and is averaging 21.6 points on 50 percent shooting (32 of 64) over the last five games. The Blue Devils are struggling on defense (68.6 points allowed, 10th in ACC). Duke leads the all-time series 30-8.

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (19-7, 10-2): The Seminoles have won two straight over Duke after losing the previous five meetings. The Seminoles needed another clutch shot from Snaer to get past Virginia Tech last week, but followed that up with a 76-62 victory over North Carolina State on Saturday. Florida State has benefited immensely from the emergence of sophomore guard Ian Miller. Miller, who missed the first 11 games because of academic issues, is averaging 12.7 points off the bench over the last four games.

Why Duke Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this game, an appreciation of the odds is really the first and best place to start. Florida State snuck up on Duke in the first meeting of the season between these two teams. Nobody expected the Seminoles to go into Durham, North Carolina, and pull out a win inside Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke’s almost impregnable home arena. Yet, that’s exactly what the Seminoles did on a Michael Snaer three-pointer at the final buzzer. Florida State is having a terrific season, but the Seminoles lost to Boston College and Clemson in Atlantic Coast Conference competition. They experience many lulls and letdowns over the course of a 30-game slate, and they lost at home to Princeton earlier this season while also losing their other marquee non-conference contests in November and December.

It’s only in January that Florida State began to play well, and the Seminoles – who are unaccustomed to playing for ACC regular-season championships – are likely to feel the pressure of this moment far more than Duke, which has been through so many high-stakes battles over the years under Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski. It would be harder to think that Florida State could sweep Duke than to think that the Blue Devils will gain a season split. Pure odds stand in favor of Duke, not against it.

Why Florida State Will Win

The college basketball betting experts who follow the Atlantic Coast Conference are plainly aware of one very simple truth: Florida State plays up to the competition when it is facing a highly-credentialed foe, and down to the competition when it is facing a lower-tier team in the ACC. Florida State’s losses this season in the ACC have come against bottom-feeders, but the Seminoles have handled the best teams, beating both North Carolina and Duke. This game is on FSU’s home floor in Tallahassee, Florida, giving coach Leonard Hamilton’s squad yet one more occasion in which to gather its emotions and play a high-energy game in front of an amped-up home crowd. Florida State is in position to play well in this game, and it is likely to throw a strong defensive effort at the Blue Devils, a team that can easily fall into bad habits at the offensive end of the floor. Duke sometimes slips into a pattern marked by a lot of deep three-pointers within a context of one-on-one play and an unwillingness to rotate the ball around the perimeter. Duke can be impatient, and if the Blue Devils exhibit that trait, Florida State not only can, but will, take advantage.

Who Will Win

The odds will likely have the final say here. Duke will likely play a more focused, determined and airtight brand of ball. Florida State will put up a good fight, but Duke should prevail and get a split of the season series.

THE STORY: Duke travels to Boston College in a game between an ACC have and have not. The No. 4 Blue Devils can move into a three-way tie for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a win over the Eagles, who are tied for 10th and have the league’s worst overall winning percentage. Expect to see a few 3-pointers: Duke leads the ACC with 8.2 per game and Boston College ranks third at 7.2. Duke leads the series 9-1 since the 2005-06 season. The Eagles’ win came in Chestnut Hill and the three home losses were by an average of 4.3 points.

ABOUT DUKE (22-4, 9-2 ACC): The Blue Devils will be trying to win their sixth straight league game for the first time since the 2005-06 season. Brothers Mason and Miles Plumlee are combining to average 17.9 points and 16.3 rebounds, and one of them has led the team in rebounding in 24 of 26 games. Seth Curry is averaging 18.6 points over the last five games, during which he’s been in double figures every time and shot 43.2 percent on 3-pointers. Austin Rivers, named the ACC Freshman of the Week for the fourth straight time, is averaging 15 points and has had 22 double-figure games. Duke has trailed at the half in three of its last four games.

ABOUT BOSTON COLLEGE (8-18, 3-9): Freshman Ryan Anderson has put together three straight impressive outings, averaging 17.7 points and 7.7 rebounds and shooting 54.3 percent over that span. Anderson had 22 points and 10 rebounds in the last game against Maryland and improved his season average of 10.4 points. Over the last six games, Matt Humphrey is averaging 12.7 points and has scored in double figures five times. He is averaging 10.2 points and 3.5 rebounds. Dennis Clifford (9.3 points, 4.8 rebounds) and Lonnie Jackson (8.5 points) have also been steady freshmen performers.

Thursday NCAA basketball: NC State at No. 4 Duke

The NC State Wolfpack are surging into contention in the ACC and they can make a major statement with an upset at No. 4 Duke on Thursday night – Place your college basketball bets at WagerWeb.com.

Hard to know how good the Wolfpack are, however. Yes, they have won three in a row and six of eight, but those two losses were to the only two ranked clubs they played in that stretch (North Carolina and Virginia). On Saturday, NC State won 61-52 at Georgia Tech. C.J. Williams scored 15 points and North Carolina State avenged a loss to Georgia Tech last month. The Wolfpack (18-7, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) got a typically balanced scoring attack, with three other players in double figures. N.C. State forward Scott Wood finally missed a free throw, ending his ACC record streak at 66 in a row.

Duke (21-4, 8-2) has won two in a row and won Saturday vs. Maryland in what could have been a letdown game after the Blue Devils’ stunning upset win at North Carolina last week. Against the Terps, Miles Plumlee had 13 points and a career-high 22 rebounds and younger brother Mason had 16 points and 10 boards in a 73-55 victory. Miles’ rebound total was the most of any player in Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski’s 37-year career. It was the first time both Plumlee brothers had double-doubles in the same game during their three seasons together at Duke. Their 32 combined rebounds were one fewer than the entire Maryland team.

Duke and N.C. State have met 235 times heading into Thursday’s game with the first meeting between the two schools coming in 1912. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 138-97, including a 46-23 mark at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke has won two straight and five of the last six games in the series. Duke has won 13 straight home games in the series. The Blue Devils have a +18.2 scoring margin in that span. They have won each of the last eight home games against NC State by double figures.

This is the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season.

THE STORY: Ninth-ranked Duke has scorers all over the court and may have finally found the player capable of taking over at the end of games in freshman Austin Rivers. Maryland ranks 11th in the ACC in scoring defense, surrendering 70.1 points, and has dropped five of its last seven games. The Terrapins controlled the pace for a short time in the first meeting but eventually ran out of gas, dropping a 74-61 in College Park on the day they renamed the court after former coach Gary Williams. With the outside shots not falling in that matchup, the Blue Devils went to the inside and got 23 points and 12 rebounds from Mason Plumlee.

ABOUT MARYLAND (14-9, 4-5 ACC): Stuck in seventh place in the ACC, the Terrapins need a strong finish to improve their NCAA Tournament at-large hopes. With four of the remaining seven regular-season games against ranked opponents, Maryland will need to get more from a defense that has surrendered 76.4 points over the last seven games. The Terrapins snapped an eight-game road losing streak with a 64-62 victory at Clemson on Tuesday despite nearly squandering a 14-point lead. Maryland has lost its last four trips to Cameron Indoor Stadium and 10 of 11 overall to the Blue Devils.


ABOUT DUKE (20-4, 7-2): The Blue Devils have lost two straight home games for the first time in five years, including a crushing overtime loss to Miami on Sunday. They trailed at North Carolina by double figures on Wednesday before Rivers took over. The highly touted prospect buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cap an 85-84 victory over the archrivals and finished with 29 points. Rivers has stepped up over the last three games, averaging 22.3 points.

THE STORY: Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski questioned his team’s effort following its stunning 78-74 home loss to Miami on Sunday. With so much at stake, the ninth-ranked Blue Devils shouldn’t have any trouble getting motivated for their matchup against No. 5 North Carolina. The Tar Heels are tied with Florida State for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference, a game ahead of Duke. A Blue Devils loss would put them two back with seven conference games left. Duke has won four of the last five in the series, and eight of the past 13 at Chapel Hill.

ABOUT DUKE (19-4, 6-2 ACC): Duke gave up 18 offensive rebounds against Miami, including eight by Reggie Johnson, who torched the Blue Devils with a 27-point, 12-rebound effort. Tyler Zeller, the Tar Heels’ senior forward, might be able to do the same. Zeller has scored 14 or more in eight straight games and has five double-doubles during that stretch. If Duke allows him to control the glass and require extra defenders, it could open things up on the outside for Harrison Barnes, Reggie Bullock and P.J. Hairston. The trio has made a combined 102 3-pointers. Mason Plumlee paces Duke with 9.7 rebounds per game.


ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA (20-3, 7-1 ACC): A rivalry known for its fantastic finishes hasn’t been all that competitive in the last two years. Though North Carolina did salvage an 81-67 home win last year, its four losses have come by six, 10, 17 and 32 points. In the most recent meeting, a 75-58 Duke victory in the ACC championship game, the Blue Devils took a 42-28 halftime lead and smothered the Tar Heels defensively, holding them to 33.9 percent shooting. The Tar Heels might be tough to slow down this time around. During their five-game win streak, they’ve scored 74 or more four times and have won every game by nine or more.

THE STORY: After winning three straight games and four of its last five, Miami finally has some momentum going as it attempts to solidify a spot in the top half of the ACC. What the Hurricanes don’t have in the near future is a favorable schedule. Miami will visit No. 5 Duke, beginning a stretch in which they will travel to No. 24 Florida State and host No. 6 North Carolina over the next 11 days, with a visit from Virginia Tech thrown into the mix. The upside is that a few wins in that stretch could make for a very compelling at-large case for the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils will do their best to dash those hopes. Duke was called out by coach Mike Krzyzewski after a blowing a big lead in a win over St. John’s on Jan. 28. Responding to their coach, Duke kept the foot on the gas and thrashed Virginia Tech on the road Thursday.

ABOUT MIAMI (13-7, 4-3 ACC): The Hurricanes gained some momentum by picking on the bottom of the ACC with wins at Boston College and Georgia Tech and then survived a test against Maryland, outlasting the Terrapins in double overtime. Miami nearly rivals the Blue Devils in terms of offensive balance with four players averaging in double figures led by Malcolm Grant’s 13.3 points. Where the Hurricanes lag behind is in efficiency, shooting 44.3 percent as a team. They shot a combined 41.1 percent in two losses to Duke last season.


ABOUT DUKE (19-3, 6-1): The Blue Devils have had a tendency to let teams hang around and will have to work to not overlook Miami with a trip to rival North Carolina coming up Wednesday. Krzyzewski shook up his lineup against the Hokies, bringing Seth Curry and Ryan Kelly off the bench to give the reserves a little more punch. The two responded with a combined 26 points. Duke leads the ACC in 3-point shooting at 40 percent, followed in second by Miami, which connects at 36.3 percent.

THE STORY: Coach Mike Krzyzewski was not happy at all with the way his team played on Saturday, even though No. 5 Duke managed to hold off a late rally to beat St. John’s. “I didn’t like today,” he said after the game. “And if my team doesn’t like today, then we’ll get better.” One of the things Krzyzewski has been masterful at during his career as the all-time wins leader is getting his team to respond when he decides to challenge them. That could mean bad news for Virginia Tech. The Hokies always seem to be one or two possessions away from knocking off an opponent and will be trying to keep their season from slipping away when they host the Blue Devils on Thursday. Virginia Tech has lost six of its last seven games, with those setbacks coming by an average of 4.1 points.

ABOUT DUKE (18-3, 5-1 ACC): The Blue Devils crushed Virginia Tech, 77-63, in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament in March but fell in its last trip to Blacksburg, 64-60, as the No. 1 team in the country on Feb. 26, 2011. Duke struggled to 4 of 20 from 3-point range in that setback. The Blue Devils have cruised through much of their schedule but are not burying teams when they have the chance like their coach would like. They held a 22-point lead over St. John’s and watched it dwindle to four before closing out. Duke has also let struggling ACC teams like Georgia Tech and Clemson stick around.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (12-9, 1-5): The Hokies have developed a habit of falling into first-half holes only to rally after the break and come up just short. They missed their first 15 shots in a 70-68 loss to BYU on Jan. 25 and shot 6-of-25 in the first half of a 73-69 loss at Maryland three days later. One area in which Virginia Tech excels is perimeter defense, where they hold opponents to an NCAA-best 25.9 percent on 3-point attempts. Duke is shooting 39.9 percent from beyond the arc.

THE STORY: The 2011-12 edition of St. John’s is nothing like the team that thrashed then-No. 3 Duke at Madison Square Garden last season. This year’s team does not have any of the eight players that saw the court for the Red Storm in that win, and went on to beat six ranked teams en route to an NCAA Tournament berth. St. John’s, which started five freshmen in a win over West Virginia on Wednesday, has lost to each of the seven ranked teams it has faced so far in 2011-12. The Red Storm will take on their eighth ranked team when they visit the sixth-ranked Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Duke will be playing at home for the first time since last Saturday, when it dropped a 76-73 decision to Florida State. That marked the end of a 45-game winning streak at home and was the Blue Devils’ first home loss to an unranked opponent in 65 games.

ABOUT ST. JOHN’S (9-11): The Red Storm went with the all-freshman starting five for the first time on Wednesday, and it is believed to be the first all-freshman starting lineup for the program since 1927-28. It worked, as St. John’s snapped a four-game losing streak with a dominating 78-62 victory. One of the big differences was in distribution, with the Red Storm finishing with 17 assists on 31 field goals. Overall, St. John’s ranks 301st nationally with an average of 11.0 assists.

ABOUT DUKE (17-3): One streak that remains intact is a 93-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. The Blue Devils’ last loss at home to a non-conference team came to St. John’s, 83-82, on Feb. 26, 2000. Duke is much different from the team that lost to St. John’s last year. In that game, Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler combined for 52 points. Those two are now gone, replaced as top scorers by Austin Rivers (14.2) and Ryan Kelly (12.5) in a more balanced, efficient attack. The Blue Devils rank 11th nationally in scoring (80.2) and 12th in field goal percentage (49.2).
