THE STORY: Georgetown just missed a chance for a marquee win when it took No. 2 Syracuse to overtime on Wednesday, but the 11th-ranked Hoyas can still improve their resume by taking care of business against five straight unranked opponents, starting with St. John’s. Georgetown has won six straight at home in the series and used its Big East-best scoring defense (58.8 points) to rout St. John’s 69-49 last month. The Red Storm have dropped two straight games by a combined 47 points.

TV: 1 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN3.com

ABOUT ST. JOHN’S (10-14, 4-8 Big East): The Red Storm are 0-9 against ranked teams and will have their shortest roster yet for this matchup. Junior guard Malik Stith left the team last week, leaving the Johnnies with only six scholarship players that see regular action. That means even more of a burden is placed upon an all-freshmen starting lineup that hasn’t played consistently on either end of the floor over the past two games. The Red Storm let both visiting Cincinnati and Syracuse shoot better than 51 percent. Defense, though, wasn’t the problem in their first matchup with the Hoyas. Instead, St. John’s, which ranks last in the conference in assists, struggled in the half-court set and went 0 for 10 from 3-point range.

ABOUT GEORGETOWN (18-5, 8-4): The Hoyas’ defense is predicated on aggressive ball pressure that has troubled even the conference’s most seasoned guards. Georgetown held Syracuse senior Scoop Jardine to 1-of-7 shooting in the 64-61 overtime loss and limited UConn’s Jeremy Lamb to 4 of 18 in a home win earlier this month. The Hoyas have been dominating the boards just as well, outrebounding the Orange by 18 and owned the Red Storm by 12. St. John’s was outrebounded 46-22 last time out against Cincinnati.

1. St. John’s leading scorer D’Angelo Harrison went 1 for 12 with four turnovers in the first matchup, while Georgetown’s two top scorers, Jason Clark and Hollis Thompson, combined for 35 points.

2. Georgetown is 12-1 at home; St. John’s is 2-6 on the road.

3. Moe Harkless may have hit the freshman wall. The versatile slasher had been the team’s leading scorer most of the season and scored 21 points and 10 rebounds against Georgetown. Harkless, though, has reached double figures once in the last three games and is shooting 28.2 percent.

NCAA College Basketball Prediction: Syracuse Orange against St. John’s Red Storm

THE STORY: Fab Melo will re-enter the Syracuse lineup when the Orange visit Madison Square Garden on Saturday for an in-state showdown with St. John’s. The 7-foot center missed the last three games for the second-ranked Orange, who looked out of sync in their first loss to Notre Dame but have rebounded for two straight wins. Syracuse is still showcasing offensive efficiency, but missed Melo’s presence around the rim, as it was outrebounded by 16 a week ago against West Virginia. Another fresh body only adds to one of the nation’s strongest rotations, as Syracuse can go 10-deep. St. John’s, on the other hand, starts five freshmen and has just two quality reserves. The Red Storm, though, seem to have finally found a groove, winning two straight in the Big East.

TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN3.com

ABOUT SYRACUSE (22-1, 9-1 Big East): Dion Waiters has been almost as absent as Melo from the Syracuse stat sheet. The Orange’s second-leading scorer is shooting just 25 percent in his last three games and was even benched Jan. 23 at Cincinnati. St. John’s, though, presents a favorable matchup for a slashing guard like Waiters. The Red Storm allowed West Virginia’s Kevin Jones to enter the lane at will en route to 26 points and 14 rebounds late last month. St. John’s will try to keep pace with Syracuse up and down the floor, but it might backfire against a team that thrives in transition and leads the nation in steals.

ABOUT ST. JOHN’S (10-12, 4-6 Big East): St. John’s has found a nice balance from its top-flight recruiting class, as both Moe Harkless and D’Angelo Harrison have each gone for at least 29 points in the last two games. A full-court, up-tempo attack was successful in an 87-81 at DePaul on Wednesday, but the Red Storm could run out of gas against a deep team like Syracuse. In their last meeting, St. John’s run-and-gun style earned it a five-point halftime advantage before Syracuse’s fresher legs in the second half led to a 79-73 win for the Orange.

TIP-INSCLICK HERE for 5$ Handicappers Package
1. St. John’s is 2-1 with an all-freshmen starting lineup, but is 0-8 against ranked teams.
2. The 2-3 zone could present major problems for St. John’s in the halfcourt set. The Red Storm rank last in the Big East with just 10.7 assists per game.
3. Melo had his coming out party in that victory over St. John’s last March with a then-career high 12 points, including two critical buckets in the final two minutes.

THE STORY: The 2011-12 edition of St. John’s is nothing like the team that thrashed then-No. 3 Duke at Madison Square Garden last season. This year’s team does not have any of the eight players that saw the court for the Red Storm in that win, and went on to beat six ranked teams en route to an NCAA Tournament berth. St. John’s, which started five freshmen in a win over West Virginia on Wednesday, has lost to each of the seven ranked teams it has faced so far in 2011-12. The Red Storm will take on their eighth ranked team when they visit the sixth-ranked Blue Devils at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Duke will be playing at home for the first time since last Saturday, when it dropped a 76-73 decision to Florida State. That marked the end of a 45-game winning streak at home and was the Blue Devils’ first home loss to an unranked opponent in 65 games.

TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN3

ABOUT ST. JOHN’S (9-11): The Red Storm went with the all-freshman starting five for the first time on Wednesday, and it is believed to be the first all-freshman starting lineup for the program since 1927-28. It worked, as St. John’s snapped a four-game losing streak with a dominating 78-62 victory. One of the big differences was in distribution, with the Red Storm finishing with 17 assists on 31 field goals. Overall, St. John’s ranks 301st nationally with an average of 11.0 assists.

ABOUT DUKE (17-3): One streak that remains intact is a 93-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. The Blue Devils’ last loss at home to a non-conference team came to St. John’s, 83-82, on Feb. 26, 2000. Duke is much different from the team that lost to St. John’s last year. In that game, Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler combined for 52 points. Those two are now gone, replaced as top scorers by Austin Rivers (14.2) and Ryan Kelly (12.5) in a more balanced, efficient attack. The Blue Devils rank 11th nationally in scoring (80.2) and 12th in field goal percentage (49.2).

TIP-INS:

1. Duke is 14-6 all-time against St. John’s (5-1 at Cameron Indoor Stadium).

2. Moe Harkness posted his seventh double-double for St. John’s on Wednesday.

3. The two schools have a combined 62 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Duke Looks for Rare Betting Line Payout Versus St. John’s

The Duke Blue Devils will be out for revenge on Saturday afternoon as they get a visit from the St. John’s Red Storm in a college hoops matchup at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

St. John’s upset Duke at home as a 9-point underdog when those schools met last season, as the Red Storm cruised to a 93-78 victory. The combined score of that contest made it a slum-dunk OVER result on the posted total of 141 points at the sportsbooks.

That result broke up Duke’s seven-game winning streak against St. John’s, but the numbers haven’t been as kind to them against the spread as they’ve only managed to cover in three of their last 10 meetings with the Red Storm.

OVER/UNDER bettors haven’t seen an UNDER in this series since back in 2007; since then there has been one PUSH and three OVER results between the two schools.

No. 8 Duke will be favored against St. John’s on Saturday, and they’re coming off a 74-61 win on the road over Maryland. That has the Blue Devils at 17-3 straight up and 8-12 against the spread on the season.

Mason Plumlee was good for 23 points and 12 rebounds for Duke against the Terrapins, whileRyan Kelly added 14 points, and Austin Rivers chipped in with 10 points.

St. John’s has struggled to a 9-11 straight up (6-10-1 against the spread) record this season, but they beat West Virginia 78-62 at home in their most recent contest.

Moe Harkless scored 23 points to go along with 13 rebounds for the Red Storm against the Mountaineers, helping them snap a four-game losing streak. D’Angelo Harrison added 19 points on that day.
