THE STORY:
Notre Dame and Villanova are heading in opposite directions of late, with the No. 25 Fighting Irish riding a seven-game winning streak and the Wildcats having dropped four of their last five. Villanova may have to play without leading scorer Maalik Wayns, who missed Wednesday’s loss at South Florida with a sprained MCL. The Wildcats sputtered offensively without Wayns, scoring a season-low 51 points – more than 20 below their season average.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU, ESPN3.com

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (18-8, 10-3 Big East): The Fighting Irish have found surprising success in league play by slowing the pace of the game – their 60.5 possessions per game in conference action are the fewest among Big East teams. Notre Dame has held six of its last seven opponents to less than 60 points, allowing 58.7 points during conference play. Junior forward Jack Cooley (11.9 points , 9.2 rebounds, 1.6 blocks) has posted three consecutive double-doubles, including a 22-point, 18-rebound effort against Rutgers on Wednesday.

ABOUT VILLANOVA (11-14, 4-9): The Wildcats had little trouble scoring before Wednesday, averaging a healthy 72.7 points, but they rank 15th in the league in points allowed (71.8) and in turnover margin (minus-2.2). Villanova has generated a great deal of its offense at the foul line, where it leads the Big East by a wide margin at 76.0 percent to make up for a league-worst field goal percentage of 41.5. Wayns (17.8 points, 4.5 assists, 90.2 percent free throws) has been the team’s driving force offensively, with junior forward Mouphtaou Yarou (11.1 points, 8.2 rebounds) providing some inside strength.

1. Villanova holds a slight 18-15 edge in the series, including 10-6 at home.

2. The Fighting Irish coasted to a 93-72 home victory in last season’s lone meeting with the Wildcats, but current Notre Dame players scored only 10 of the points.

3. The two teams have split their last 10 meetings, with each side sporting a 3-2 mark on its home floor during that stretch.

THE STORY:
No. 18 Marquette brings a five-game winning streak into Philadelphia when it faces  at noon Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center. The Golden Eagles’ only Big East losses have been to Syracuse and Georgetown. The Wildcats have turned around their worst start in league history and have won two of their last three – letting a halftime lead slip away in a road loss to Louisville last time out. Three of Marquette’s four losses have been on the road. The Golden Eagles edged the Wildcats 81-77 on Jan. 1, behind a balanced scoring effort led by Darius Johnson-Odom’s 24 points.

TV: Noon ET, ESPN2, ESPN3.com

ABOUT MARQUETTE (17-4, 6-2 Big East): The Golden Eagles are a well-rounded bunch, with a potent offense and stingy defense. Different players represent Marquette among the league’s top five in scoring (Johnson-Odom, 18.1), field-goal percentage (Davante Gardner, 58.1), assists (Junior Cadougan, 5.6) and steals (Jae Crowder, 2.3). The Golden Eagles’ 76.3 points are second only to Syracuse’s 78, and their 17.5 assists are most in the league. They also harass opponents, ranking fifth in overall field-goal percentage defense and 3-point percentage defense.

ABOUT VILLANOVA (10-11, 3-6 Big East): The Wildcats were outscored by 15 in the second half of Wednesday’s 84-74 defeat at Louisville, after leading 44-39 at the break. Leading scorer Maalik Wayns (18.7 points) continued his recent hot stretch with a team-high 19 points, and has averaged 27.8 over his last four games since a woeful three-point night versus Syracuse on Jan. 11. James Bell, who averages 7.6 points, has reached double figures the last three games, including his first career double-double of 14 points and 13 boards against the Cardinals.

TIP-INS:

1. Marquette coach Buzz Williams collected his 100th victory with a 67-47 triumph over South Florida on Tuesday.

2. The Golden Eagles went to the foul line 13 times more than Villanova in their first meeting, but hit just 23 for 37.

3. Wayns and second-leading scorer Dominic Cheek combined for 18 points on 6-for-23 shooting (1-for-8 3-pointers) in the Jan. 1 game.

THE STORY: Maalik Wayns’ hot streak translated into Villanova’s first road win of the season the last time out. Making it two straight away from home will be the hard part. Wayns hopes to shoot the young Wildcats to their first three-game winning streak since early November on Wednesday against a rejuvenated Louisville team. Despite Wayns’ best efforts, Villanova is last in the Big East in field goal percentage (42.2). Meanwhile, 25th-ranked Louisville, also one of the worst shooting teams in the conference, has been reenergized by the return of leading scorer Kyle Kuric. Kuric’s return has the Cardinals back to their pressing style of defense, which may pose problems for a Villanova team struggling with turnovers. The Wildcats have won two straight in the series since a three-game losing streak. Wayns scored 15 points and Mouphtaou Yarou had 18 points and 11 rebounds in an 88-74 victory last season in Philadelphia.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN3.com

ABOUT VILLANOVA (10-10, 3-5 Big East):
Villanova, which is devoid of seniors, has won two straight for the first time since starting 4-0. The Wildcats have done it while riding the coattails of Wayns. Wayns, the Big East’s second-leading scorer, is averaging 30.7 points over the last three contests. The junior from Philadelphia scored 28 points in a 79-76 overtime victory against St. John’s Saturday. Redshirt freshman forward JayVaughn Pinkston has also stepped up over the last two games, averaging 18.0 points and 11.5 rebounds. Villanova is second in the Big East in rebounding margin (6.3), but ball handling and perimeter shooting are weaknesses. The Wildcats are last in the conference in turnover margin (-2.7) and 3-point percentage (30.6).

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (15-5, 3-4 Big East)
: Injuries have been a major theme for Louisville, so coach Rick Pitino must have been elated when Kuric (ankle) returned from a two-game absence and scored a season-high 21 points in a win over Pittsburgh Saturday. The Cardinals desperately needed the win, having lost five of their previous seven games. Kuric played with a protective boot on his sprained left ankle and helped the Louisville shoot 55 percent – 12 percentage points above its season average coming into the game. Freshman forward Chane Behanan scored a season-high 19 points and is shooting 55 percent over the last two contests (11 of 20). Behanan is providing help inside for Gorgui Dieng, who is third in the league with eight double doubles and first in the Big East in blocks (3.4).

TIP INS:

1. Villanova is the best free-throw shooting team in the Big East (75.4), but the Wildcats were just 15 of 26 at the line against St. John’s.

2. Pinkston, a former McDonald’s All-American, was forced to sit out last season after being charged with assault stemming from a fight at an off-campus apartment.

3. The Cardinals are fourth in the nation in steals (9.9) and sixth in field goal defense (37.2).

Villanova at Marquette Sports Betting: NCAA Basketball Gambling

Villanova at Marquette
When: 1:00 PM ET, Sunday, January 1, 2012
Where: Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

THE STORY:
Marquette coach Buzz Williams issued a challenge to his team after it was embarrassed at home by Vanderbilt in its non-conference finale Thursday. “Season one is over,” Williams said. “Season number two starts (soon). We can respond like champs or we can respond like chumps.” Williams hopes the latter isn’t the case Sunday afternoon when 13th-ranked Marquette hosts Villanova in its Big East opener. No matter the outcome, the Golden Eagles are sure to take a tumble in the rankings after being dismantled 74-57 by the Commodores. Each of the last five meetings with Villanova have been decided by five points or less. The Wildcats prevailed 75-70 at the Pavilion last season, and lead the series 11-7. The Golden Eagles are 4-0 in conference openers at the Bradley Center.

TV: ESPNU

ABOUT VILLANOVA (7-6, 0-1 Big East):
The Wildcats, who play five freshmen, have lost six of nine. Villanova was doomed by 15 turnovers and a 3-for-14 effort from beyond the arc in a 83-69 loss to West Virginia in its Big East opener Wednesday. Junior guards Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek each scored 20 points. Wayns (17.6 points, 5.3 assists) and Cheek (12.2 points, 4.8 rebounds) haven’t received much help offensively. Junior center Mouphtaou Yarou (12.9 points, 8.5 rebounds) is the only other player averaging double figures. The Wildcats are uncharacteristically bad from 3-point range (31 percent). Villanova, however, is 21st in the nation in rebounding (40.0).

ABOUT MARQUETTE (11-2, 0-0 Big East): The Golden Eagles have lost two of three after a 10-0 start. Not much went right in the loss to Vanderbilt, which began the season as a top-10 team. The Golden Eagles missed 16 of their first 17 shots and trailed 35-8 with under eight minutes left in the first half. No one had a worse night than senior forward Jae Crowder (17.2 points, 7.5 rebounds). The team’s second leading scorer missed his first seven shots and finished 4-of-13 for 16 points. Meanwhile, Darius Johnson-Odom (17.4 points, 3.4 rebounds) hit five of 15 attempts and is shooting 33 percent over the last two games. The undersized Golden Eagles missed 6-11 center Chris Otule, who has sat out the last five games with a knee injury, after big man Davante Gardner was limited to five minutes due to foul trouble against the Commodores. Despite the poor showing, Marquette is still 29th in the nation in scoring (78.5 points).

TIP INS:

1. “We were too reliant on making shots in hopes of increasing our energy.” – Williams, on the Golden Eagles abysmal first half in which they shot 21.2 percent.

2. Otule has been out since Dec. 6 and Williams said Thursday his return is “a long time from now.”

3. As of the latest NCAA statistics posted on Dec. 18, the Wildcats were the eighth-best free-throw shooting team in the nation (77.7). Click here to Place your College Basketball bets at Bovada Sportsbook
